Many people have medicine cabinets filled with traditional over-the-counter medications that are used occasionally. Many of those medicines are the same ones their families had when they were growing up. It's not uncommon to see a very familiar tube of hemorrhoid ointment in there, right along side the thermometer, razor, and ibuprofen. Have you ever wondered how hemorrhoid creams work and whether or not they were safe? Let's dig a little deeper and find out.
How Does A Cream Shrink Swelling?
There are a couple of substances that have a shrinking effect. One of them is a class of substances known as astringents, which actually shrink body tissues when applied topically. Astringency is also that dry feeling in your mouth you get from eating certain foods, like persimmons or banana peels, and astringents are also found in some red wines and teas. Witch hazel is a very common astringent, and it's one that hospitals use with women who have just given birth.
Phenylephrine is another substance that acts as a shrinking agent, except that it shrinks blood vessels. Since hemorrhoids are caused by inflammed blood vessels, phenylephrine helps to shrink hemorrhoids, which is why it's an active ingredient in one of the most popular hemorrhoid creams on the market. Incindentally, phenylephrine is also used to shrink blood vessels in the nose, which then produce less mucous, and act as a decongestant.
What Else Is In There?
Some hemorrhoid ointment ingredients include an anesthetic which simply relives the pain and burning without having much effect on the hemorrhoid itself. Others, including some variations of the popular hemorrhoid cream, contain petroleum jelly products to keep the area lubricated and reduce irritation.
Are There Side Effects?
Just as with any medication, you should always consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications or have conditions such as diabetes, a heart condition, or other blood-related disorders. Certainly, you should read the product label thoroughly and follow the directions exactly.
Some very rare side effects include dizziness, headaches, irregular heartbeat, nervousness, shakiness, or trouble sleeping. Allergic reactions are also very rare, but you should call your doctor if you experience a rash, itching or swelling (especially in the face or mouth/throat), extreme dizziness, or trouble breathing.
Some people would rather not risk the side effects of any over-the-counter medications and simply rely on natural substances such as those found in alternative and traditional Chinese remedies.
